Violent tornadoes tore through Jefferson City and Golden City, Mo., on Wednesday, killing at least three people and trapping dozens in destroyed homes and buildings.

Witnesses have been sharing photos and videos from the storms, including of a powerful “wedge” tornado (which is wider than it is tall) that touched down after 11 p.m. while many Jefferson City residents were sleeping. The storm was moving at 40 miles per hour and sent debris as high as 13,000 feet into the air, the National Weather Service reported.

Several tornados also hit nearby small towns, including a powerful storm that has been blamed for three fatalities in Golden City. This comes a week after states in the Great Plains had been hit by severe storms and flooding.

Here are some of the powerful images that survivors have captured of the storm system and its aftermath.
